Royal Robbins coming to High Altitude Fitness, March 12th and 13th!

A presentation featuring the adventures of Royal Robbins making first ascents of big walls, as well as his partnership with his wife, Liz, climbing mountains, raising a family, and founding the Royal Robbins Company, a purveyor of unique travel and outdoor clothing.  Robbins has written two books on rock climbing and is himself the subject of an inspirational biography, Royal Robbins: Spirit of the Age by Pat Ament.

Royal was born in Point Pleasant, West Virginia, in 1935.  The Boy Scouts got him into climbing at the age of 14.  At the age of 15 he met members of the Rock Climbing Section of the Los Angeles Chapter of the Sierra Club and got seriously into climbing.  Later, in Yosemite, he made the first ascent of the face of Half Dome in 1957 and in following years put up four more routes on that face.  He went on to make the first ascents of the three great faces of El Capitan, as well as, in 1968, the first solo of that big rock.  In the late 1970’s he took up adventure kayaking and, during the 1980’s made 30 first descents of rivers in California and Chile.   Starting in 1968 he and Liz built their company, Royal Robbins Inc. into a very successful business, with Liz in charge of design and everything creative and Royal overseeing the spirit or morale of the enterprise.  They made a good team and sold the company in 1999.  Along the way they raised a family (a daughter, Tamara, and a son, Damon), with whom they had many adventures, including running the Bio Bio River in Chile and the Middle Fork of the Salmon in Idaho.
